In this section we are taking a walk through several
villages around Foya and survey several traditional handicrafts and hut making
in the early 1970s. In 1970 the surroundings of Foya in the Lofa district were still heavily forested. Most of the forest was secondary forest, which had been re-generated after being used for two to three seasons for upland mixed rice farming. Tall old trees, several hundreds of years old, and palm trees had survived from the original primary forest, but all shorter trees species and bush vegetation represented a re-growth after the upland farms had been left fallow after several farming seasons. Detailed information on traditional handicrafts and processing of oil palm is available from the author on request. |
